Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim reaffirmed his commitment to keeping captain Bruno Fernandes at the club, despite interest from Saudi Pro League teams, including Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr.

Speaking ahead of a Europa League match against Athletic Bilbao, Amorim described Fernandes as the “heart and soul” of United, emphasizing his leadership and versatility in the team’s new 3-4-3 system. The Portuguese midfielder, 30, has been a standout performer since joining United in 2020, with 85 goals and 74 assists in 246 appearances.

Saudi clubs, backed by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), reportedly offered Fernandes a three-year contract worth €90 million, aiming to lure him in the January 2025 transfer window. The interest follows Saudi Arabia’s strategy to attract global stars, with players like Neymar and Karim Benzema already in the league. However, Fernandes, whose United contract runs until 2026 with an option for an additional year, has expressed loyalty to the club, prioritizing a return to the Champions League over financial incentives.

Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November 2024, is under pressure to revive United’s fortunes after a mid-table Premier League finish in 2024. Fernandes’ role is central to his high-pressing philosophy, with the midfielder contributing three goals and five assists in 14 matches this season. The club’s financial constraints, with a £112 million net spend in 2024, limit transfer activity, making Fernandes’ retention critical. Amorim’s stance reflects United’s ambition to build around their captain, despite lucrative offers and competition from European clubs like Bayern Munich, as they aim for silverware in 2025.
