Shehu Gabam, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has warned that President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies could jeopardize his chances of securing a second term in 2027.

Speaking on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television, Gabam criticized the administration’s policy decisions, including the abrupt removal of fuel subsidies, forex rate unification, electricity and telecom tariff hikes, among others.

“He (Tinubu) needs to reassess his policies and restructure his cabinet if he intends to leave a lasting legacy,” Gabam stated. “At this rate, I don’t see him surviving another election.”

Drawing parallels to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, Gabam pointed out that mass protests against Jonathan began two years into his tenure, ultimately leading to his defeat in 2015.

“There has never been a Nigerian president who spent as much money to secure re-election as Jonathan, yet he lost. If anyone thinks money alone will guarantee victory, they are mistaken,” he added.

The SDP chairman also criticized the government’s alleged intolerance of opposition voices. He suggested that if the ruling party was against political competition, it should amend the constitution to establish a one-party state.

“Nobody can question a governor today without being insulted. The same applies to the federal government—if you offer advice, you’re seen as an enemy,” Gabam lamented.

SDP Not Bankrolled by APC – Gabam

Gabam also denied allegations by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is bribing opposition parties with N50 million to weaken their leadership.

“Atiku’s claim is false—at least for the SDP,” Gabam asserted. “We have no financial dealings with the federal government, its agents, or representatives.”

He further stressed that his party is focused on building strong institutions, stating, “Once you compromise an institution, you lose the moral authority to speak out.”
