Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has strongly condemned the recent violent attacks in the state that have resulted in the deaths of several farmers. The governor has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice and has taken immediate steps to enhance security in the affected areas.
The first major incident occurred in Gbelemotin, an agrarian community in Ovia South-West Local Government Area, where clashes between cocoa farmers and suspected produce thieves resulted in the deaths of 22 people. While initial police reports indicated seven fatalities, local sources confirmed a higher number. The violence, which began on a Thursday night, escalated into a deadly counterattack on Friday morning, further worsening the bloodshed.
In a separate incident, two residents of Okpekpe community in Etsako East Local Government Area, Batemue Philip Ebo and Christopher Bello, were reportedly killed on a Monday by suspected herders.
In response to these tragic events, Governor Okpebholo issued a statement through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, declaring a zero-tolerance policy for violence and vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice. He emphasized that his administration would not tolerate any form of violence or lawlessness in Edo State and would work tirelessly to ensure that those responsible for these heinous acts are brought to justice.
To prevent future occurrences, Governor Okpebholo has ordered the immediate deployment of additional security personnel to the affected areas. He also pledged to facilitate the establishment of a police outpost in the region to enhance security and response capabilities.
