In a case that has profoundly affected Greece, Roula Pispirigou, a 35-year-old mother from Patra, has been sentenced to three life imprisonment terms for the murders of her three daughters.
Pispirigou was found guilty of the premeditated murders of her daughters:
-
Malena (3 years old): In 2019, Pispirigou suffocated
Irida (6 months old): In 2021, she similarly suffocated Irida.
-
Georgina (9 years old): In a separate trial in 2024, Pispirigou was convicted for the murder of Georgina by administering a lethal dose of ketamine.
The Athens Mixed Jury Court delivered a unanimous verdict, sentencing Pispirigou to life imprisonment for each of the murders of Malena and Irida. This follows her previous life sentence for Georgina's murder.
The case has drawn extensive media attention in Greece, with Pispirigou often referred to as the "modern-day Medea," alluding to the mythological figure who killed her own children. The tragic deaths of the three children have sparked widespread public outrage and discussions about maternal mental health and child protection.
