A group of heavily armed gunmen launched a deadly attack on the Divisional Police Headquarters in Enugu State, killing a police constable and carting away several weapons. The attack, which took place in the early hours of the morning, has been described as a targeted assault on law enforcement by suspected criminal elements.
According to security sources, the attackers arrived in multiple vehicles, firing indiscriminately before engaging officers in a gun battle. Despite the resistance from the police, the assailants managed to breach the station’s armory and fled with an undisclosed number of firearms.
In response, Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered a tactical crackdown, deploying counter-terrorism units and specialized forces to track down the perpetrators. Authorities are also investigating whether the attack was linked to any known armed groups operating in the region.
The incident has intensified fears about rising insecurity in parts of Nigeria, particularly as police stations and security installations continue to be prime targets for gunmen.
