The Ogun State Government has intensified its efforts to protect the environment and natural resources by deploying the Amotekun Corps to combat illegal mining and logging activities within the state. This initiative aims to preserve the state's ecological balance, safeguard community livelihoods, and ensure sustainable use of natural resources.
Illegal mining and logging have posed significant environmental and economic challenges in Ogun State, leading to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, and depletion of mineral resources.
These activities have also resulted in conflicts within communities and loss of revenue for the government. In response, the state government has empowered the Amotekun Corps to enforce environmental laws and regulations, deter illegal activities, and apprehend offenders for prosecution.
The Amotekun Corps, established as a regional security outfit in the South-West, has been tasked with:
-
Monitoring and Surveillance: Conducting regular patrols in forest reserves and mining sites to detect and prevent illegal activities.
-
Enforcement: Collaborating with other security agencies to enforce environmental laws, arrest offenders, and ensure they face legal consequences.
-
Community Engagement: Working with local communities to raise awareness about the adverse effects of illegal mining and logging and promoting community-based monitoring systems.
