A deepening rift has emerged between two prominent Yoruba monarchs, as the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, accuses the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, of orchestrating efforts to dethrone him. This accusation has intensified discussions about unity and leadership within the Yoruba traditional institution.

In a recent video, Oba Akanbi claimed that despite his support for Oba Ogunwusi's ascension to the throne in 2015, the Ooni has been plotting against him. He alleged that Oba Ogunwusi was instrumental in his suspension from the Osun State Council of Obas and has been collaborating with certain local chiefs to destabilize his reign.

The relationship between the two monarchs has been fraught with controversies. In 2020, the Oluwo faced a six-month suspension by the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers for alleged misconduct towards fellow monarchs. While specifics were not publicly detailed, reports suggest that the suspension was linked to disputes involving the Ooni.

The Ooni of Ife has previously addressed rumors of discord, emphasizing that he harbors no ill will towards the Oluwo. In a statement from his palace, Oba Ogunwusi clarified that there is no ongoing dispute between the two, urging the public to disregard unfounded speculations.

The public nature of this feud has raised concerns about unity among Yoruba traditional leaders. Observers fear that such disputes could undermine the cultural cohesion and respect traditionally accorded to monarchs in the region.

Elders and stakeholders within the Yoruba community are advocating for dialogue and reconciliation between the two monarchs. They emphasize the importance of solidarity among traditional leaders in addressing contemporary challenges facing their communities.

The allegations leveled by the Oluwo against the Ooni highlight underlying tensions within the Yoruba traditional hierarchy. As these events unfold, there is a collective hope that both leaders will find common ground to preserve the dignity and unity of the institution they represent.
