In a bid to foster inclusive governance and accelerate development in Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has extended an olive branch to opposition parties, urging them to join hands with his administration to move the state forward.
The governor, who recently emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the forthcoming governorship election, emphasized the need for collective efforts in addressing the challenges facing the state and implementing policies that will benefit the people.
Speaking at a stakeholders' meeting in Akure, Aiyedatiwa acknowledged the role of opposition parties in a democratic system but stressed that governance should transcend political differences. He noted that elections may be competitive, but after the polls, the focus should be on unity and progress. “Ondo State belongs to all of us, and we must put aside our political affiliations and work together for the benefit of our people,” he said.
Aiyedatiwa's appeal comes amid growing concerns over political tensions in the state, following the passing of former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. Since assuming office as governor, Aiyedatiwa has faced internal political wranglings within the APC, with some party stakeholders opposing his leadership. However, he has remained resolute in his commitment to good governance, emphasizing that his administration is focused on delivering infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic reforms that will uplift the people of Ondo State.
He specifically called on opposition figures and party leaders to engage in constructive criticism and dialogue rather than adversarial politics. “The opposition plays a crucial role in a democracy, but rather than engage in divisive rhetoric, I urge my brothers and sisters in the opposition to offer solutions, collaborate where necessary, and hold us accountable in a way that drives development,” Aiyedatiwa stated.
Political analysts have weighed in on the governor’s gesture, noting that while opposition parties traditionally serve as checks on government policies, a collaborative approach could lead to a more inclusive and people-oriented governance style. Some stakeholders within the state’s political landscape have welcomed Aiyedatiwa’s call, describing it as a step in the right direction, while others remain skeptical about the sincerity of the invitation.
Meanwhile, opposition figures, including the People's Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant, have yet to formally respond to Aiyedatiwa’s call for unity. Some sources indicate that internal party strategies and the upcoming governorship election may determine whether any form of collaboration is feasible.
With Ondo State preparing for the next electoral cycle, Governor Aiyedatiwa’s appeal for unity may play a crucial role in shaping the political discourse. Whether his message will resonate with opposition leaders remains to be seen, but his emphasis on unity, dialogue, and collective governance signals an attempt to ease political tensions and prioritize the state’s progress over party differences.
