The political crisis in Rivers State has escalated further, with Governor Siminalayi Fubara declaring his readiness to resist any attempt to remove him from office. This comes amid growing tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the party leadership issues a stern warning to loyalists of former governor Nyesom Wike against actions that could destabilize the state.
Fubara, who has been locked in a political battle with Wike’s camp since assuming office, is facing an impeachment threat from lawmakers believed to be aligned with the former governor. The friction between the two political heavyweights has thrown the state into a deep political crisis, with allegations of betrayal, disloyalty, and high-stakes power play dominating the discourse.
Addressing his supporters at a rally in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to governance, stating that he would not be intimidated by threats of impeachment. He accused his detractors of attempting to hijack the government for selfish interests, stressing that Rivers people elected him to serve, not to be a puppet of political godfathers.
“I was elected by the people of Rivers State, and I will stand firm in my responsibility to them. No amount of intimidation or political scheming will derail the mandate given to me,” Fubara declared.
Meanwhile, the PDP leadership, in a strongly worded statement, condemned what it described as reckless attempts by Wike’s loyalists to undermine the state’s stability. The party warned that any action leading to a constitutional crisis in Rivers would not be tolerated, urging all factions to put the state’s interest above personal ambitions.
As the political drama unfolds, all eyes remain on the Rivers State House of Assembly, where impeachment proceedings are reportedly being considered. Analysts believe the unfolding power struggle could redefine the political landscape in Rivers, especially as the 2027 elections draw closer.
