Controversial Nigerian cross-dresser and social media personality, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has been at the center of allegations suggesting that he did not serve his full six-month prison sentence within the confines of the correctional facility.
These claims were notably amplified by activist Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, who alleged that Bobrisky spent a significant portion of his sentence outside the prison premises, purportedly due to influential connections.
In response to these allegations, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, commissioned an investigative panel to examine the veracity of the claims. The panel's interim report, presented by Dr. Uju Agomoh, Executive Director of Prisoners' Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), stated that there was no evidence to suggest that Bobrisky served his sentence outside the custodial center. The report confirmed that Bobrisky was incarcerated from April 12, 2024, to August 5, 2024, with the standard remission applied.
However, the panel did acknowledge that Bobrisky received certain privileges during his imprisonment. These included access to his mobile phone, frequent visits from family and friends, and the assignment of specific inmates to assist him with errands.
These revelations have ignited public discourse on the fairness and integrity of the correctional system, with many questioning the consistency of inmate treatment and the potential influence of social status on prison experiences. The Ministry of Interior has pledged to address any disparities and ensure equitable treatment for all inmates, irrespective of their societal standing.
