In a fiery defense of Nollywood’s integrity, veteran Yoruba actor Kunle Afod has vehemently denied allegations of sexual misconduct in the industry, dismissing claims of sex-for-roles as exaggerated and urging accusers to provide concrete evidence.
Speaking on Nollywood on Radio on April 20, 2025, as reported by Pulse Nigeria, the 51-year-old filmmaker argued that romantic advances are not unique to Nollywood but occur across professions, often involving mutual consent. His bold stance, echoed on TheCable Lifestyle, has reignited a contentious debate about accountability and talent in Nigeria’s film industry, captivating audiences and sparking fervent discourse.
Afod, a household name with decades in Yoruba cinema, challenged actresses claiming coercion to “come out and say it openly,” asserting that talent, not transactional relationships, determines success. “One thing I tell people, bring out those that said they raped them in the industry,” he declared, emphasizing that consensual interactions are commonplace in workplaces like schools, hospitals, and banks. “If you are not good and you sell your body, you are just wasting your time,” he told Naija News, underscoring that producers prioritize skill over exploitation. Afod also empowered women to bypass gatekeepers by producing their own films, noting, “Everybody can produce. That’s Nigerian style.”
The remarks follow similar defenses by Nollywood veterans like Jide Kosoko, who in March 2025 denied coerced sexual activities. Critics, however, argue Afod’s comments downplay systemic issues, with some actresses alleging exploitation by unnamed producers. Social media buzzed with mixed reactions, as X posts hailed Afod’s candor while others demanded accountability.
