In a poignant display of reverence, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, joined world leaders at the Vatican on April 23, 2025, to pay his respects at the lying-in-state of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at age 88.

The ceremony, held in St. Peter’s Basilica, drew thousands of mourners, their faces etched with grief, as they honored the pontiff whose humility and compassion touched millions. Obi’s presence, a testament to his deep Catholic faith, underscored the universal impact of Francis’ legacy, resonating profoundly in Nigeria, where over 30 million Catholics mourned.

Obi, dressed in somber black, stood among dignitaries, as he prayed beside the pope’s simple wooden casket, adorned with a single cross. In a statement shared with the press, he described Francis as “a beacon of hope,” praising his advocacy for the poor and his bold stance on climate justice. “His life was a sermon of love and sacrifice,” Obi said, urging Nigerians to emulate the pope’s call for unity. His attendance, alongside figures like U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, highlighted Nigeria’s spiritual connection to the Vatican, forged through Francis’ messages of peace.

The lying-in-state, a three-day vigil, saw pilgrims streaming through the basilica, their whispers mingling with the scent of incense. Obi’s visit, lasting several hours, included a private audience with Vatican officials, where he expressed gratitude for Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si, which inspired environmental activism in Africa. Back home, Nigerians lauded Obi’s gesture, with Catholic communities in Anambra holding special Masses.
