The Rivers State caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the National Assembly has declared its support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, signaling a significant shift in political alignment.

The caucus, comprising senators and House of Representatives members from Rivers State, announced the decision during a press conference in Port Harcourt on April 24, 2025. The move is seen as a boost for Tinubu’s administration, particularly in the politically influential South-South region, amid ongoing tensions within the PDP.

Led by Senator John Azuta Mbata, the caucus cited Tinubu’s economic reforms, including the liberalization of the foreign exchange market and infrastructure development, as reasons for their support. They praised the administration’s efforts to clear over $4 billion in foreign exchange backlogs and its commitment to improving power supply through initiatives like the Aso Rock solar project. The caucus also expressed confidence in Tinubu’s ability to address Nigeria’s security challenges and foster inclusive governance. The pledge comes despite the PDP’s national leadership remaining opposed to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), highlighting internal divisions within the party.

Political analysts suggest that the defection of the Rivers PDP caucus may be linked to local dynamics, including the ongoing rivalry between former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and his successor, Siminalayi Fubara. Wike, a prominent PDP figure and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has maintained close ties with Tinubu, fueling speculation of a broader realignment in Rivers State politics. The caucus’s decision has sparked mixed reactions, with some PDP members accusing the lawmakers of betraying the party, while others view it as a pragmatic move to secure federal support for Rivers State. The development is expected to reshape the political landscape in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
