President Bola Tinubu has directed Nigeria’s security agencies to “crush” the remnants of Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents following a suicide bombing in Konduga, Borno, on June 15 that killed 20 civilians. The order, issued during a National Security Council meeting in Abuja on June 21, aims to end the insurgency that has killed over 30,000 since 2009.
Tinubu, via spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, mandated the deployment of additional A-29 Super Tucano jets and 10,000 troops to Borno and Yobe. The attack, claimed by ISWAP, targeted a market, highlighting the group’s resilience despite 100,000 surrenders since 2021. Defence Chief Gen. Christopher Musa vowed to clear Sambisa Forest by Q4 2025. Tinubu also approved ₦500 billion for counter-terrorism equipment.
The directive follows accusations by Governor Babagana Zulum that politicians aid insurgents. Over 8.3 million Nigerians need humanitarian aid due to the crisis. Critics, including , note past military abuses, like 10,000 forced abortions, may fuel unrest. Tinubu urged community intelligence to curb attacks, which killed 580 in 2024.
