Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has dismissed the newly formed 2027 opposition coalition, led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as no threat to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating this during a press conference on July 11, 2025, in Ibadan.
The coalition, which includes defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other parties, aims to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. Makinde, a PDP stalwart, expressed confidence in his party’s structure, citing its 2023 electoral performance and grassroots support as bulwarks against the new alliance.
Makinde acknowledged the coalition’s momentum, driven by figures like former governors and ministers, but argued its lack of cohesion and clear leadership undermines its viability. He emphasized PDP’s ongoing reconciliation efforts post-2023, including recent zoning debates, as evidence of resilience.
Critics within the PDP, however, warn of internal divisions, particularly over Atiku Abubakar’s potential candidacy, which the coalition seeks to counter. Makinde called for unity, urging members to focus on governance, while the ADC has yet to respond, with analysts predicting a competitive 2027 race despite his optimism.
