Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has pledged to serve a single four-year term if elected president in the 2027 general elections, making the commitment during a major address to supporters in Port Harcourt.

Amaechi, who contested the 2023 primaries under the All Progressives Congress (APC) before defecting to the National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement, outlined a focused agenda to tackle Nigeria’s pressing challenges. “One term is sufficient to restore security, rebuild infrastructure, and stabilize the economy,” he declared, setting a target of securing 10 million votes to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Amaechi’s pledge comes amid widespread discontent with Tinubu’s governance, marked by a 33% inflation rate, 10,217 deaths from insecurity since 2023, and a Naira devaluation that has eroded the savings of 20 million citizens. He contrasted this with his proposed N2 trillion economic recovery plan, which includes generating 1 million jobs through road and rail projects, addressing the current 12,000 MW power deficit, and reducing the national debt from $36 billion.

Supported by 60% of his 1 million followers according to a recent local poll, Amaechi’s announcement has fueled 2027 speculation, though FCT Minister Nyesom Wike dismissed it as a “desperate ploy” to regain relevance. To bolster his campaign, Amaechi has allocated N300 million for nationwide rallies beginning July 7, aiming to win 15 states and capitalize on public frustration with the APC’s 20 state governorships.
