Beninese singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo became the first African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, marking a historic milestone for African music.

Kidjo’s star, located at 6801 Hollywood Boulevard, honors her 40-year career, featuring Grammy wins, including Best World Music Album for Remain in Light in 2022, and her advocacy for African girls’ education through the Batonga Foundation.

The 64-year-old, known for blending Afrobeat with jazz and funk, performed a medley of hits like “Agolo” and “Afrika,” captivating the crowd. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, led by Ana Martinez, highlighted Kidjo’s $10 million in charitable donations, impacting 50,000 girls across Benin, Nigeria, and Kenya.

The event, costing $75,000, was funded by sponsors like Universal Music Group, with 70% of proceeds supporting local arts. Kidjo dedicated the honor to Africa’s 1.4 billion people, saying, “This star is for every African dreamer.” A follow-up concert at the Hollywood Bowl on July 5 will celebrate her legacy, expecting 10,000 fans.
