A Lagos State High Court has sentenced Mohammed Gobir, former non-executive director and chairman of the Business Development Committee at Afromedia Plc, to seven years in prison for fraud, with the verdict delivered on July 10, 2025.

Gobir was convicted on 17 counts of stealing, forgery, and obtaining money by false pretenses, related to a $300 million scam between 2008 and 2015. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecuted the case, alleging Gobir defrauded the outdoor advertising company by promising a ₦1 billion investment that never materialized.

The court, presided over by Justice Mojisola Dada, found Gobir guilty after a six-year trial, rejecting his defense of ignorance. Evidence included forged documents and witness testimonies from Afromedia staff, with losses estimated at ₦120 billion in today’s value.

legal team plans an appeal, arguing procedural errors, while the EFCC hailed the ruling as a deterrent. The case, initiated in 2019, underscores Nigeria’s fight against corporate fraud, with Gobir’s sentence including a forfeiture of assets, though no fine was imposed.
