Senator Dino Melaye on July 31, 2025, formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), delivering a scathing critique of the party’s “lack of potency” in opposing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a detailed resignation letter released to the media, the former Kogi West senator, a prominent political figure known for his oratory and activism, accused the PDP leadership of failing to resolve internal factionalism and mount an effective challenge ahead of the 2027 elections. Melaye, who defected from the APC to the PDP in 2022, expressed frustration over being overlooked for the Kogi governorship ticket, a position he contested unsuccessfully in 2019 and 2023, hinting at exploring “viable alternatives” without specifying his next political affiliation.

The departure exacerbates the PDP’s ongoing crisis, following the exit of key figures like Sam Egwu to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, weakening its opposition status with a membership drop of 15% since 2023, per party records. Insiders suggest Melaye’s decision stems from a power struggle with National Chairman Umar Damagun, who favored other candidates.

The narrative of political realignment is significant, with Melaye’s influence, evidenced by his 300,000 social media followers and past legislative impact, potentially swaying voter sentiment in Kogi and beyond. However, his future direction remains uncertain, with speculation of joining the ADC or forming a new platform, making his next move a critical watchpoint.
