The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on July 13, 2025, at age 82, as announced by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo on July 14.

The decision, approved by President Bola Tinubu, complements the seven-day national mourning period and coincides with Buhari’s burial in Daura, Katsina State, scheduled for 2:00 p.m. A statement by Permanent Secretary Magdalene Ajani described the holiday as a tribute to Buhari’s “dedication, integrity, and commitment to unity,” reflecting his 2015-2023 tenure’s focus on infrastructure and security.

The holiday will see government offices, banks, and schools closed, with citizens encouraged to reflect on his legacy, including the controversial Naira redesign and agricultural initiatives. Katsina State and the Northwest Governors Forum have also declared public holidays, enhancing the nationwide observance.

Critics, including labour unions, worry about economic disruptions, but supporters see it as a fitting honor. The declaration aligns with logistical adjustments for the burial, with Vice President Shettima overseeing repatriation from London.
