The Federal Government on July 29, 2025, called for calm amid protests in Ghana, condemning the “blanket” generalization of Nigerians as criminals following violent demonstrations in Accra over economic hardship.

Chairman of Nigerians in Disapora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa expressed concern over attacks on Nigerian businesses, with 20 shops looted and 10 arrests reported by the Ghanaian police since July 27. The ministry urged Ghanaian authorities to protect the 1.2 million Nigerian diaspora, a key economic contributor via trade worth $500 million annually.

The protests, driven by 40% inflation and fuel price hikes, saw some locals blame Nigerians for currency manipulation, a claim dismissed by the Nigerian High Commission as baseless. Ghanaian officials promised investigations, but past tensions, like the 2019 deportation of 1,000 Nigerians, fuel distrust.

The narrative of diplomatic tension is delicate, with Nigeria seeking fairness while critics question the government’s leverage, given economic interdependence, making resolution a test of bilateral relations.
