Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has approved ₦2.185 billion in entitlements for 218 former councillors, an announcement made on July 11, 2025, during a meeting with local government chairmen.

The funds cover unpaid severance packages and allowances from their 2018-2021 tenure, delayed due to bureaucratic hurdles. Each councillor will receive approximately ₦10 million, addressing long-standing grievances.

Idris, elected in 2023, framed the payment as a fulfillment of campaign promises to enhance local governance, with disbursements slated for August 2025 pending audits. The move has been welcomed by the councillors’ association, though some demand interest for the delay.

Critics argue the allocation strains the state’s ₦120 billion budget, but supporters highlight its morale-boosting effect. The governor plans similar payouts for other officials, pending revenue improvements.
