The Federal High Court in Abuja fined suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan ₦5 million for contempt, following a ruling by Justice Binta Nyako.

The penalty stems from a Facebook post on June 15, 2025, mocking a gag order imposed during her legal battle with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over sexual harassment allegations. The court found the post undermined its authority, ordering public apologies in two national newspapers and on social media by July 7.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension since March 6, 2025, and the contempt charge have fueled a 70% public outcry, with 2,000 constituents protesting in Lokoja. Her legal team plans an appeal, arguing the fine violates free speech, while Akpabio’s allies hail it as a deterrent.

The case coincides with the court’s recall directive, creating a legal paradox. Analysts predict a 60% chance of escalation, with the Senate debating compliance by July 9.
