A devastating incident during a survival training exercise claimed the lives of three Colombian soldiers on July 14, 2025, when their raft overturned in the Magdalena River near Puerto Berrío.

The accident, involving the 4th Brigade, occurred during a night operation amid torrential rain and swift currents, with the Colombian Army reporting the tragedy on July 15. The victims, aged 22 to 28, were part of a 10-member unit; seven were rescued after a four-hour operation, while searches continue for one missing soldier, supported by divers and helicopters.

The Army has launched a comprehensive investigation, suspending all field training pending a safety audit, as families demand answers, alleging insufficient life vests and inadequate preparation. Defense Minister Iván Velásquez offered condolences, noting this marks the 15th such incident since 2020, with a total of 22 deaths, prompting calls for enhanced protocols.

The rugged terrain, where 80% of Colombia’s military exercises occur, poses inherent risks, exacerbated by climate challenges, with local media reporting flooded camps. The tragedy has sparked national mourning and a reevaluation of training standards.
